Magnesium is the fourth most abundant mineral and the second most abundant intracellular divalent cation in the body. It is an essential mineral involved in over 300 metabolic reactions in the body. Magnesium helps maintain normal nerve and muscle function, heart rate (cardiac excitability), vasomotor tone, blood pressure, the immune system, bone health, and blood sugar levels, and aids in calcium absorption. Magnesium has been studied as an ergogenic aid for athletes due to its role in energy production and storage, normal muscle function, and blood sugar levels. This article discusses the general role of magnesium, magnesium requirements, assessment of magnesium status, and dietary magnesium intake and its effects on exercise performance. The number of research articles cited was limited to the period 2003 to 2014.
